Bar Exam Week: Logistics, Routine, and Staying Steady Under Pressure

Exam week has its own challenges: logistics, nerves, and two or more long days. A practical checklist and routine for the week of the bar.

By exam week, the studying is mostly done. What's left is making sure nothing outside your control gets in the way, and keeping yourself steady for two or more long days.

A week before

  • Read your jurisdiction's exam instructions in full. What you can bring, what's prohibited, arrival times, and procedures differ by jurisdiction. For the NextGen UBE, follow NCBE's and your jurisdiction's instructions for the exam software.
  • Laptop and software. If you're typing, complete any required software registration and practice exams by the deadline. Update your operating system well before exam day, not the night before. Make sure your battery holds a charge and bring your charger if permitted.
  • Documents. Print or save your admission ticket. Check that your ID is valid and matches the name on your registration.
  • Travel and lodging. Confirm reservations. If you're staying near the site, plan to arrive the day before.
  • Accommodations. If you've been approved, confirm the details and location.

Two days before

  • Pack your bag using the permitted items list. Many jurisdictions require a clear plastic bag.
  • Plan meals and snacks for exam days. Choose foods you know agree with you.
  • Plan your route and a backup. Know where to park or which transit to take.
  • Do a light review session. Stop early.

The day before

  • Visit the exam site if practical, so there are no surprises about entrances or security.
  • Lay out clothes in layers. Exam rooms are often cold.
  • Do a short rule review, an hour or two at most, focused on your most important rules.
  • Eat a normal dinner and go to bed at a reasonable time. It's normal to sleep lightly the night before; rest is still valuable.

Exam mornings

  • Wake up with enough time that you're not rushed.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Arrive early. Lines at security can be long.
  • Avoid last-minute discussions with other takers about what might be tested.

Between sessions and between days

  • At lunch: eat, drink water, and step away from the room if permitted. Don't discuss the morning session.
  • In the evening: do a light review of rules for the next day's content if that helps you feel prepared, then stop. Don't try to relearn anything.
  • Let go of the previous session. Everyone walks out of the bar exam sure they missed something. You can't change it, and dwelling on it costs you focus for the next section.

When nerves hit during the exam

  • Pause and take a few slow breaths.
  • Return to your process: read the call, spot the issues, write the rule, apply the facts.
  • If you blank on a rule, write what you do remember and apply it to the facts. Partial rules with good application still earn credit.
