A 3L who says 'I'll figure out the bar later' may be postponing several decisions at once: exam format, application deadline, character and fitness timing, MPRE requirement, local law components, score portability, and whether moving states changes the application strategy.

Start with where you realistically intend to practice

Employment plans matter, but so do score portability and admission requirements. During the NextGen transition, first administration dates differ by jurisdiction.

Create an admissions checklist

List application opening and deadline, exam type, MPRE score, character and fitness filing, accommodations process if relevant, local component, fees, document requirements, and score-release expectations.

Let the jurisdiction shape course and study decisions

If a tested subject is unfamiliar, an upper-level course may reduce first-time learning later. If the jurisdiction uses NextGen, integrated research and writing practice deserves explicit space in the final-year plan.

Choosing a jurisdiction is an administrative and academic decision. Make it early enough that your 3L schedule, budget, and bar-prep materials are built for the exam you will actually take.
