February 2027 Bar Exam: Legacy UBE or NextGen? Your 21-Week Plan Starts Now
The February 2027 bar is about 21 weeks away. First, confirm which exam you're taking. Then use this week-by-week plan to build rules, practice, and pacing.
If you're sitting for the bar exam in February 2027, you have something most bar takers don't: time. Late September to late February is about 21 weeks. Used well, that's enough to build a strong rule base before the intensive weeks start.
Step 1: Confirm which exam you're taking
This matters more than it used to. The NextGen UBE debuted in July 2026 in a first group of jurisdictions, and more are transitioning through 2027 and 2028. The legacy UBE remains available through the February 2028 administration.
The two exams are very different in format:
- Legacy UBE: the MBE (200 multiple-choice questions), the MEE (six essays), and the MPT (two performance tasks), weighted 50/30/20.
- NextGen UBE: about nine hours over a day and a half, mixing multiple-choice questions, integrated question sets, and performance tasks, reported on a new 500–750 scale.
The next NextGen administration is February 23–24, 2027. Check NCBE's NextGen decisions by jurisdiction page and your jurisdiction's bar admissions site to confirm your format, your passing score, and any local component. If you might transfer your score, check portability too; NCBE notes, for example, that Florida and New York won't accept NextGen transfer scores earned before July 2028.
Step 2: Phase your 21 weeks
Phase 1: Weeks 1–8 (late September to late November). Rule foundation.
- Work through the core subjects on a rotation: Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Business Associations.
- Focus on recall, not reading. For each subject, get to where you can state the major rules from memory.
- Add 10–20 practice multiple-choice questions a day by week four.
- This phase can be part-time if you're working.
Phase 2: Weeks 9–15 (December to mid-January). Application.
- Continue daily rule review, with more time on weak subjects.
- Increase to 30–50 multiple-choice questions a day.
- Legacy takers: write two or three timed MEE essays a week. NextGen takers: practice integrated question sets and performance tasks from NCBE's sample materials.
- Start MPT or performance task practice by week 12.
Phase 3: Weeks 16–21 (mid-January to exam). Exam simulation.
- Full-length timed practice sessions every week.
- Rule review targeted at your recorded weak areas, not a full reread.
- Taper in the final few days. Sleep matters more than one more outline.
Step 3: Keep a mistake log
Every missed question and weak essay tells you something. Log the rule you missed and the reason: didn't know it, knew it but misapplied it, or misread the facts. Review the log weekly. That turns practice into targeted study.
Step 4: Handle logistics now
Application deadlines, character and fitness documentation, accommodations requests, laptop and software registration, and travel all have their own timelines. Put every deadline in your calendar this week.
