Both legacy MPT work and NextGen constructed-response work require organized legal analysis, but students in the 2026–2028 transition should use materials built for the exam they will actually take. The labels, timing, source materials, and task design are not interchangeable.

Legacy examinees should use current MPT materials

The MPT asks examinees to complete a realistic lawyering task using a closed universe of provided materials. Official point sheets are valuable because they show the organization, authority use, and task completion expected by graders.

NextGen examinees should study the new constructed-response format

NCBE published a dedicated NextGen constructed-response guide in 2026. NextGen integrates doctrine and skills and may ask examinees to work with supplied legal resources in ways designed around new-lawyer tasks.

The shared lesson is task discipline

Read the assignment first, identify the product and audience, organize before drafting, use supplied authority accurately, and complete the requested work. Strong legal knowledge does not rescue an answer that ignores the task.

Practice with official or exam-specific materials whenever possible. During the transition, using the wrong task format can create false confidence about timing and expectations.
