MBE Strategy: How to Pace 200 Questions and Pick the Right Answer More Often
The MBE is as much about process as knowledge. Pacing, reading the call first, and eliminating answers systematically can add real points.
The Multistate Bar Examination is 200 multiple-choice questions over six hours, split into two three-hour sessions of 100 questions each. Of the 200, 175 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions you can't identify. On the legacy UBE, the MBE counts for half your score.
Knowing the law matters most. But process adds points too.
Pacing
Six hours for 200 questions works out to about 1.8 minutes per question. A practical approach is to use checkpoints: within each three-hour session, aim to finish about 17 questions every 30 minutes.
If a question is taking too long, make your best choice, mark it, and move on. You can return if time allows. Never leave an answer blank; there's no penalty for guessing.
Read the call first
Read the last line, the call of the question, before the fact pattern. It tells you what you're looking for: the strongest argument, the most likely outcome, whether evidence is admissible. You'll read the facts with a purpose and catch the relevant details the first time.
Predict before you read the answers
After reading the facts, try to name the issue and predict the answer before looking at the choices. Answer choices are written to look plausible. If you already know the rule, you're less likely to be pulled toward a trap.
Eliminate systematically
Most MBE questions come down to two strong choices. Eliminating the clearly wrong ones first makes the final choice easier. Common reasons an answer is wrong:
- Misstated rule: the choice gets an element wrong.
- Right rule, wrong facts: the rule is correct, but it doesn't apply here.
- Answers a different question: it's true, but not responsive to the call.
- Wrong conclusion from the right reasoning, or the right conclusion from wrong reasoning. Both parts of the choice must be correct.
Watch the qualifiers. "Because" requires the reasoning to be the actual basis. "If" means the condition just has to be possible on the facts. "Unless" means the condition must be the only thing that changes the result.
Review practice questions properly
Most of the value in MBE practice comes from review, not from the questions themselves. For every question, including ones you got right, ask:
- Which rule was tested?
- Why is the right answer right?
- Why is each wrong answer wrong?
- If I missed it, why? Didn't know the rule, misread the facts, or fell for a trap?
Log the rules you missed. Patterns show you where to spend your study time. If you keep missing questions on the same rule, the fix is rule review, not more questions.
Build stamina
The MBE is long. Before exam day, complete at least a few full 100-question timed sets, and at least one full 200-question simulation, under realistic conditions.
Where Lexora Prep fits
Many MBE mistakes come from knowing a rule approximately instead of precisely, and wrong answer choices are designed to exploit exactly that gap. Lexora Prep is a Black Letter Law rule-training platform that helps close it. You practice 700+ concise rules across 8 bar-tested subjects from memory in five modes, and Lexora tracks the specific elements you miss and builds your review sessions around them. When your practice-question log shows a weak rule, you can drill it until it's precise.
