# Personal Jurisdiction: Separate the Constitutional Question From the Case Facts
Personal jurisdiction feels difficult because students try to remember cases as separate rules. A more stable framework begins with the type of jurisdiction asserted and then asks whether the defendant has the constitutionally required relationship with the forum.
Start with the easy bases
Before writing a minimum-contacts essay, check traditional bases such as consent, waiver, domicile for individuals, and service where applicable. The statutory basis also matters.
Distinguish general from specific jurisdiction
General jurisdiction is ordinarily limited to forums where the defendant is essentially at home. Specific jurisdiction focuses on forum contacts connected to the claim and requires analysis of purposeful conduct, relatedness, and fairness.
Use facts to explain the relationship
Do not write 'minimum contacts are satisfied' as a conclusion. Identify what the defendant did, whether the defendant deliberately created a relationship with the forum, how the claim relates to that conduct, and what fairness considerations matter.
The reliable answer is a sequence, not a case-name dump. Identify the basis, classify the jurisdiction, then use facts to explain the defendant-forum relationship.
